Porcelain inlays or porcelain onlays are fillings made from porcelain that fit into or onto the tooth. They are indicated when there is too little tooth structure to support a white filling but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which is more destructive to the tooth.
Porcelain inlays/porcelain onlays take two visits to complete. The first session is when the filling is placed as temporary. Our master ceramist then creates the custom-made porcelain inlay or onlay in the lab. The second session is 1-2 weeks later when we bond the porcelain inlay, which fits precisely, to the tooth.
The significant advantage of porcelain inlays/porcelain onlays is that they are much more durable than white fillings, lasting up to 30 years. Fillers often reduce the strength of a tooth, but porcelain inlays/porcelain onlays can increase a tooth’s strength.
